8/24/2008 Samburu, game drive, flight Samburu to Nairobi, Karen Blixen Center/Museum, Giraffe Center, dinner Carnivore Restaurant, overnight flight Nairobi to London

We are up for the sunrise and our last game drive.   It's 6:30 am but we'll return to the camp for breakfast.

Sunrise

We see common waterbuck, scenery, Longnotoi Hill, African rabbit in the bushes, cape buffalo with 3 red billed oxpeckers, baboons in trees, fresh lion tracks, a dik dik peeing to mark his territory, young male lion trying to mate with an uninterested female, male Somali ostrich sitting on eggs in the nest, a group of Beisa oryx-some are licking water from the ground per Jelly, male common waterbuck, a black backed jackal running so fast I couldn't get a picture!  A small herd of elephants.

Back to the camp for breakfast.  Check out.  Jelly drives us to the airstrip at 10:00 am.  I give him a thank you note and a $40 tip.  We were very lucky in that we saw all of the "special 5"- gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, Somali ostrich, and Grevy's zebra.  Our SafariLink flight leaves at 10:40 am.  We have stops in Saba and Nynuki.  I saw the slopes of Mount Kenya but was unable to get a picture.  Darn!

Wilson Airport

We are picked up around 11:30 am from the Wilson Airport by a guy from Pollman's.  He drops us off at the  Karen Blixen Coffee Garden for lunch.  I have a tuna sandwich with coke and Richard has a roast beef sandwich with Tusker beer.  At 2:00 pm we're picked up and driven a short way to the Karen Blixen Museum.  We have a guided tour.  I bought some postcards and coffee.

Next is the Giraffe Center.  We were here before at the start of our trip.  But it's nice to see the Rothschild giraffes again.  We were supposed to go to the Kazuri Bead Factory which is run by single women but it's closed.

At 5:30 pm we are taken to Carnivore Restaurant for dinner.  This place is famous for its variety of meats, some of which are unusual.  Tonight on the menu is crocodile meat and ostrich meatballs along with pork, turkey, leg of lamb and much more.  This is a neat place.  There's this huge grilling BBQ type area with several men cooking the meat. At your table is a flag.  As long as it's upright servers will continue to bring you a variety of meats skewered on a long sword.  When they get to your table you are asked if you want what they have.  If yes, then it's sliced off for you.  On the table is a large lazy susan with corn relish, salads, different sauces for the meat.  You also get baked potatoes.  I think I had turkey, beef, ribs, some chicken, pork, lamb, ostrich meatball, and a tiny bit of crocodile.  I asked for very small slices so I could taste them all!  Richard finally laid that flag down.  We were stuffed. and couldn't eat another bite.  Dessert-so many choices but settled for ice cream.

Our driver has our luggage with him and it's all there.  We drive to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for our overnight flight to London.  This airport is named after Kenya's first president Jomo Kenyatta.  We get here at 8:00 pm.  Our British Airways flight #64 is scheduled to depart at 11:20 pm.  No problems with check in but my nail care set that I forgot to put in my checked baggage got confiscated.
