Planning and preparations

After the success of our trip to China in 2007 my husband and I decided to do another lengthy trip.  Longer trips/vacations are now possible as we are both retired.  The next destination on my wish list was Africa.  I have wanted to do a safari trip for a long time.  We have decided to make this our trip for 2008.  At the time of this trip I will be 63 and my husband will be 66.  Because we had so much luck with an agency for China I thought we should do the same for Africa.  I was torn between eastern Africa-Kenya and Tanzania-or South Africa.  I finally decided eastern Africa was the area I wanted to visit.  We began our planning around January 2008.

I researched a lot of agencies offering safari trips but ended up at our local agency Liberty Travel.  Working with Sue we looked at several companies offering east Africa trips.  We settled on Brendan. They offered a 15 day East African Explorer which I liked due to the number of game drives, the itinerary, and a guarantee safari vehicle not older than 24 months and maximum 7 tour members in a vehicle with a window seat and a pop up roof.  There was also some flexibility to modify the tour.  Airfare would be from New York City/JFK on British Airlines.  We'd have a stop in London both ways.  I found out that we could add time in London which we decided to do returning home.  We'd be able to get our Kenya visas in Nairobi on 8/8.  We'd get our visas for Tanzania on 8/15 in the border town of Namanga when we will cross over from Kenya into Tanzania.

Then I researched when is the best time to go.  I found a website that had the information I needed which rated Africa's top wildlife preserves according to month.  This site also showed what wildlife is best seen by country and park reserve.  I came up with early August as a good time.  Brendan had a tour where the land portion would start in Nairobi on 8/9/2008 and would end in Nairobi on 8/21/2008.  So the 15 day East African Explorer wasn't 15 days on the ground in Africa.  Time included the international flights.  We made a lot of adjustments.

Our itinerary would be 8/7/2008 overnight flight British Airlines NYC/JFK-London/Heathrow-Nairobi.  We would land in Nairobi on 8/8/2008 early evening.  We decided to add 2 extra nights in Nairobi.  One night would be 8/8-8/9/2008.  The other night would be 8/21-8/22/2008.  We added 2 nights 8/22-8/24/2008 at the Intrepids tented camp in northern Kenya.  Our Africa trip would end 8/24/2008.  Our overnight flight British Airlines would leave Nairobi evening 8/24 and arrive London morning 8/25.

For our stopover in London we added 4 nights but not through Brendan as they only did the Africa part of this trip.  Sue did that add on for us.  We'd be in London from 8/25-8/29/2008.  We'd stay at the Holiday Inn Kensington Forum and we'd have airport transfers included.   Then flight British Airlines London to NYC/JFK 8/29/2008.  I booked our round trip flights Buffalo-NYC/JFK; then NYC/JFK-Buffalo on Delta Airlines.  I will cover London in a separate blog.

I used seat guru website to choose our flight seats on British Airlines as they would be the longer flights so I wanted to be as comfortable as possible.

Once all this was done I started to research Africa.  I bought Lonely Planet East Africa 2006 edition, Kenya Tourism Guide 2007/2008 edition, Globetrotter Safar Guide Kenya 2007 edition, Travellers Thomas Cook Tanzania & Zanzibar2007 edition, Bradt East African Wildlife 2008, and National Audubon Society Field Guide to African Wildlife.  Even bought a book on the language-Swahili.  In hindsight I did go overboard with the book buying!

Then of course we heard about the post 2007 election violence that happened in Kenya January/February 2008.  Should we do this trip?  We decided to continue with our trip, paid the deposit, took out travel insurance, and hoped for the best.

Because I hadn't done a detailed journal of our 2007 China trip I decided that I would do a journal for our 2008 Africa trip.  In the journal I wrote down information on tipping, local currency, information about our accommodations, photography..........  On the Fodor's Forum I even found a comprehensive packing list.  I researched shopping options as I did want to bring back gifts for family and for myself.  Then I discovered we would be in Africa at the time of the "Great Migration".  I printed out the annual migration calendar through Kenya and Tanzania.  While in the Masai Mara I might get to see this!

Preparation was not too bad.  I got the usual toiletries, first aid stuff, necessary supply of our medications, sunscreen, insect repellant.  We ended up buying convertible zip off pants, some long sleeve shirts, quick dry underwear and socks, and buffs (go over your head, lay around your neck, can be pulled up to cover nose and mouth) that we'd use to protect us from the dust while riding in the safari vehicle.  I bought a Canon "Safari" lens, binoculars.

I checked out the CDC.  Ended up getting some immunizations-yellow fever, typhoid, and a polio/IPV booster.  Didn't need the tetanus as got that back in 2007.

This shows east Africa area recommends immunizations for polio, typhoid fever, yellow fever, tetanus and diphtheria

8/7/2008 Up, up and away we go!

Up early.  Arrive Buffalo Airport.  Check in, go through security.  We are on Delta #5537 to JFK.  Departs 11:20 am.  Arrives at 12:55 pm.  We have a long layover here.  We have lunch at Todd English Bonfire.  We share skirt steak soft tacos and caesar salad $37.00.

We have to go from the Delta terminal to the British Airways terminal for international flights.  Our flight to London is on British Airways #174.  Departs 6:45 pm.  Arrives next day 8/8 at 6:55 am. The airport was congested and we didn't make it on to the runway for take off until around 8:30 pm!  JFK is a very busy airport.  Dinner was better than expected for airline food.  Chicken, rice, and peppers.  Salad, roll. Dessert was cheesecake.  Had 2 bottles of wine-chardonnay and syrah.  Tea, water.  Coke with snack.  Movies on demand.  Watched Kung Fu Panda, Narnia.  There were 24 movie selections. Our seats were comfortable with wrap around head rests and foot rests.  Back rows were empty so Richard and I moved so we each had 2 seats to ourselves.  Very nice.

8/8/2008 Flight London to Nairobi, Safari Park Hotel

Breakfast is on our flight before we land in London.  Orange juice, coffee, croissant.  Not bad.  Overall the flight from New York to London was comfortable.

We arrive London at 6:55 am.  Get to our departure gate for our final flight.  We are on British Airways #65 departs 10:35 am, arrives Nairobi at 9:00 pm.  This flight has no empty seats so I have to say this flight was uncomfortable.  However the service was great with 2 meals and a snack.  Our first meal was chicken tarragon, carrots and green beans, salad, roll, and fruit trifle.  To drink I had tea and water.  Then we were served a snack of choice of beverage (I had coke) and pretzel nubs.  The final meal was chicken/lettuce/tomato rocket sandwich, fresh pineapple, brownie, beverage.  I had lemonade and coffee.  The movie I watched was Maid of Honor.  Unfortunately I couldn't find my flight ticket for this leg of London to Nairobi so no picture to post.

Our flight London to Nairobi departs 10:35 am and is BA65 even though this board lists AA65

Our plane London to Nairobi

It took us 2 hours to get our Kenya visas and the cost was $50 each or $100 total for both of us.  We ask for the visitor's pass for reentry into Kenya.  At the airport I use my debit card at a Barclay's Bank get some local money-13000 kmh.  6000 ksh=USD $100  A representative is waiting for us with our name on a sign.  We meet Lea who is with Pollmans.  Pollmans will be taking us through Kenya.  Driver Francis drives us to Safari Park Hotel where we will spend 2 nights 8/8-8/10.  It's dark so no picture of the hotel.  Lea tells us that  we are lucky because there will only be another couple with us in our safari vehicle.  There are 2 other vehicles with our group.  One has 7 people, the other has 6.  We are to meet in this hotel lobby Sunday 8/10 at 7:55 am.  We're told breakfast here at the hotel is served from 5:30-10:30 am.  Initially our room was #107 which had a king bed.  Since we had requested 2 beds this trip we got moved to room #106 that had 2 double beds.  Exhausted we go to bed.  Feels nice to finally sleep in a bed!

We are up at 5:00 am!  I guess we are excited to start our day.  Now I can take pictures of our hotel.  It's quite nice.  Too bad we never got to enjoy the swimming pool!

Buffet breakfast at our hotel.  Lots of items to choose from and very tasty.  I had a made to order omelet, fresh fruit, toast, and coffee.  Richard is more adventurous so what he had was more like a combo American/European/African breakfast.

We are in the lobby for our 7:00 am pick up.  I had booked a full day tour with Waymark for $80 per person.  We meet Billy and Kennedy.  Billy is our driver/guide for Nairobi National Park.  We first saw the ashes from ivory burning.  This is ivory confiscated from poachers who sell the elephant ivory tusks.  The Nairobi skyline.  More wildlife than I expected.  Black rhino, Burchell's or plains zebras, hartebeest, tawny eagle up in a tree, eland, grey crowned crane, male impala, Massai giraffe, long tailed fiscal shrike on a tree branch, warthog, sacred ibis in a tree, and secretary bird in the distance.  I am very happy!  To see a black rhino is amazing as they are few and far between.

At 10:30 am we dropped off Billy and Kennedy took over.  Stop at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage Center.  There is a $5 per person charge.  I bought a booklet about this center.  Took lots of pictures of the baby elephants.  These are elephants orphaned mostly because someone has killed their mother.  There is a blind rhino that was born at the Nairobi National Park.  He will remain here until he dies.  The baby eles will hopefully be released back into the wild.

Our next stop is Giraffe Manor Feeding Center.  Cost $9 per person.  These are Rothschild giraffes.  We got to feed the giraffes and even had one kiss me!

Oh my!

Lunch is at the Verandah at Utamaduni.  I had a small side salad and coke while Richard had a ham sandwich with coleslaw and a Tusker.  Normally we don't have lunch at home so we opted for something light.

There are shops here at Utamaduni.  I ended up buying an elephant soapstone figure and a woven bamboo purse.  At another stop I got an olive wood bowl.

Our last stop is Bomas.  Cost $10 per person.  We saw different dances from areas of Kenya.

We return to our hotel around 6:00 pm.  Had dinner at the hotel.  I had a ham sandwich and coffee.  Richard had chow mien and coffee.  Boring!!!!!!!

This hotel has a gift shop.  I bought some things for my 3 week old grandson-a wooden rattle and a bag of stuffed African animals.  I'm going to make a crib mobile using these animals.
